The Challenge

Houston’s East End has long been a hub of creativity, craft, and industry. Yet for small batch manufacturers, artists, and makers, affordable and well-equipped space remained out of reach. The East End Maker Hub—developed by UpCDC and TXRX Labs—set out to change that by offering long-term leases, shared resources, and access to advanced fabrication equipment.

But the opportunity extended beyond physical space. The Maker Hub needed a brand that could tell a larger story—one about community, equity, and economic opportunity. It also needed a digital presence that could support marketing, registration, and real-time storytelling for a fast-growing tenant base.

Our Approach

LIMB partnered with UpCDC and TXRX Labs to shape a brand and digital presence that could inspire tenants, energize partners, and elevate the Maker Hub’s story.

  1. Facilitated strategic discovery sessions to clarify audience needs and define brand purpose
  2. Created a name, logo, and identity system that captured the balance of craft, creativity, and community impact
  3. Designed a responsive website to highlight space availability, tenant benefits, events, and community success stories
  4. Developed a modular toolkit for social media, signage, and digital campaigns to help amplify the brand across multiple platforms
  5. Designed each element to reflect the Hub’s mission: expand access to innovation, empower local makers, and create new pathways for economic opportunity

The Outcome

The East End Maker Hub brand positioned the initiative as more than a shared workspace. It became a symbol of inclusive innovation and economic mobility. Internally, the identity brought focus to community partners and stakeholders. Externally, it became a recognizable presence at events, in media, and across the city.

The website created a seamless experience for prospective tenants and partners to learn, engage, and take action. Today, the Maker Hub stands as a vital part of Houston’s innovation ecosystem—with a brand built to scale alongside its mission.

Strategy

Positioning a New Kind of Innovation Hub

The Hub’s mission challenged traditional assumptions about innovation by valuing hands-on making and technical craftsmanship alongside digital and academic pathways. We helped define the Maker Hub’s role within Houston’s broader creator economy, developing a positioning strategy centered on accessibility, workforce development, and upward mobility.

Rather than treating innovation as something exclusive and abstract, the brand narrative framed it as tangible, participatory, and connected to the people shaping Houston’s creative and manufacturing future.

Design

Inspired by Making Itself

Inspired by fabrication and modular construction, the identity celebrates the inherent beauty of technical precision. Geometric forms, industrial type, and structured grids translate the Maker Hub’s four focus areas into a cohesive visual language.

While early explorations tested literal representations, the final direction embraced abstraction to ensure the system could scale as the Hub grows. This modular foundation carries across digital, environmental, and campaign applications—balancing technical sophistication with the experimentation and community at the heart of the Hub.

Digital

Built for Engagement and Growth

We designed and developed a responsive digital platform that balanced usability with storytelling, making it easy for prospective tenants, partners, and community members to explore opportunities and engage with the Hub.

The website became the most complete expression of the Maker Hub identity system, translating its modular structure and visual language into a cohesive digital experience. Navigation, layouts, and interactive elements worked together to support discovery, engagement, and long-term flexibility.

Beyond day-to-day functionality, the platform provided a scalable foundation for outreach, events, and continued community visibility as the Hub evolved and expanded.
